YWCA Elm Centre

regionalArchitects, in a joint venture with Hilditch Architects, designed the two-building complex that will provide affordable and supportive housing, and a diverse array of social services, for women and First Nations singles and families living in the downtown core.

The YWCA Elm Centre / 110 Edward Street development is composed of three distinctive, stepped elements clad in clear and patterned glass, masonry and granite. A planted courtyard is nestled in the ‘U’ formed by the three components of the building complex, providing a contemplative space for residents, staff and visitors. The YWCA program includes offices, boardrooms, multipurpose/meeting rooms, a restaurant and retail store. The complex also provides offices, a meeting hall and an Economic Development Centre for Wigwamen Inc., a First Nations support organization, and administrative space for the Jean Tweed Centre, which supports women struggling with addiction.

YWCA Oak Centre / 110 Edward Street will incorporate a number of cost-effective ‘green’ design strategies that will reduce operating costs, and is being designed to meet LEED™ [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] Silver criteria.  Heating and cooling is provided by ground-source heat pumps and distributed through an in-floor radiant heating system.
